GAS & POWER: Gas markets are set to close the week at new highs, with 5% gains materializing in the last few hours following the latest rumors of a possible resumption of attacks by the United States and Israel immediately following the US midterm elections scheduled for less than two weeks. In the background, the increasingly heated conflict between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis –four new attacks on military, airport and energy infrastructure have been claimed in the last few hours – and the ongoing incidents in the Strait of Hormuz. Fundamentals are also offering further support this morning, with a downward revision to temperatures in early November. New demand for liquefied gas from China and Egypt added upward pressure on prices at European hubs this week.

QatarEnergy has signed two long-term contracts with Cheniere to purchase up to 4 million tons of LNG annually, split equally between terminals in Sabine Pass, Louisiana, and Corpus Christi, Texas. Deliveries will start in 2031 and continue until 2054. This is the first agreement of its kind for the Qatari group in the United States, while, according to three sources cited by Reuters, negotiations with Venture Global for an additional 3 million tons per year are also at an advanced stage. The operation is part of QatarEnergy's strategy to offset production capacity losses at Ras Laffan, where Iranian attacks in March damaged two of the 14 liquefaction trains, knocking out approximately 12.8 mtpa for an estimated period of three to five years. The use of multi-year contracts with American producers signals the need for Doha to secure alternative supplies for itself in a structural manner, in response to a production deficit that is set to continue well beyond the current crisis.
